Smart cities

Cities accommodate nearly 31% of India’s current population and contribute 63% of GDP (Census 2011). Urban areas are expected to house 40% of India’s population and contribute 75% of India’s GDP by 2030. This requires comprehensive development of physical, institutional, social and economic infrastructure. All are important in improving the quality of life and attracting people and investment, setting in motion a virtuous cycle of growth and development. Development of Smart Cities is a step in that direction.

Swachch Bharat mission

The SBM aims at making India free from open  defecation and at achieving 100 percent scientific management of municipal solid  waste in 4041 statutory towns/cities in the country. The targets set for the mission  which have to be achieved by 2nd October 2019 are: construction of 1.04 crore  Individual Household Latrines (1HHL), 2.52 lakh Community Toilet (CT) seats and  2.56 lakh Public Toilet (PT) seats; and achieving 100 percent door-to-door collection  and scientific management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).

National Heritage City Development And Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY)

The  Government has announced the vision of a slum-free India through a new scheme,  the Rajiv Awas Yojana. The HRIDAY scheme aims at preserving and revitalizing the  soul and unique character of heritage cities in India. In the first phase, with a total  outlay of ^500 crore fully funded by the central government, twelve cities-Ajmer, Amaravati, Amritsar, Badami, Dwarka, Mathura, Puri, Varanasi, Velankanni, Kan-  chipuram, Gaya and Warangal—have been identified for development.
